Tides Database (TdB) is a system for professional organisations wanting to record, analyse, edit and publish tidal data and generate tide predictions. To do this, vast quantities of raw data need collating and organising. This is difficult and time consuming when managed manually.
Hundreds of thousands of separate pieces of data from multiple gauges can be collected, stored, organised and analysed in TdB, making tidal data management much easier and more efficient. Hydrographers can then concentrate on the skilled aspects of tidal data management instead of spending time on manual data management activities.
TdB also provides all the workflow and visualisation tools necessary to produce Quality Assured tidal height and flow information.

TdB can import raw data in a variety of formats, and can store data for water height, gauge pressure, density, temperature, salinity and atmospheric pressure. Information about the instruments themselves, such as vertical datum information, benchmarks, instrument details, photographs is stored, as well as survey data. This includes water flow speed and direction at different immersions, pitch, roll and heading of a sensor.
Analysis and comparison
Sophisticated time series representations are available along with comparisons, concordance, Van de Casteele, time offset and scattergram displays.
The powerful graph display allows zooming and scaling of data of different types and sources on the same or multiple axis.
A comprehensive suite of graphical displays analyse the data and compare it with other relatable data sets. TdB can save the data set comparisons to file for later review.
Typical operations include correcting instrument errors (clock jitter, spikes, drift) and reconciling datum/benchmark offsets.
TdB calculates hourly heights, mean sea levels, predicted heights and applies various corrections to flow data.
A scientific approach to data storage ensures the retention of original data and enables the safe export of data in the format it was stored in the instrument.
A primary output from TdB is an hourly height series for a port. These are Quality Assured, checked and validated according to IOC guidelines. Additional output includes Mean Sea Level (Daily, Monthly, Annually) and Tide Station Record Sheets. TdB exports the data sets in several formats, including XML.
A fast, flexible graph tool allows data to be rapidly displayed and manipulated and subsets of the data can easily be adjusted or deleted. The system readily detects instrument errors, datum and other benchmark changes.
Automatic detection and indication of data anomalies are part of the graph display. This includes spikes, flats and discontinuities.
TdB rapidly scans and assesses decades of data and any changes to the station record are immediately and clearly indicated in the editor.
The system generates Tide Station Record Sheets with whatever layout is required for existing documentation and all of the Tide Station Record Sheets for any port are readily available for inspection. The full station record may contain images, specifics of each measurement campaign, installed instrument, benchmarks, datum information and so on.
Users can compare current site data with previous changes as TdB retains the full history of each site. The editing window clearly displays changes made since the previous version of the site.
TdB uses a workflow mechanism, allowing only qualified users to access, edit and approve data. This ensures integrity of the published data.
Built on an industry standard Oracle database, TdB fully supports multiple users across a LAN. It is capable of managing a global data set (thousands of ports) for the complete time span over which tidal data has been collected (100+ years).
Standard procedures can be used to support database integrity, maintain backups and manage access control.
The client application runs on a standard Windows PC and can be integrated with the Caris Hydrographic Production Database (HPD).
A standalone host enables the graphic display of port locations on a World Vector Shoreline or ENC data set.
